Summer School
The disruption and damage caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic has been significant, but we are very proud of our response to the disruption caused. Our efforts to mitigate are outlined clearly in our ‘Response to the Covid-19 report which is available here. For clarity, this page refers to Leavers which are the following year groups:
Year 7 – 2025 leavers
Year 8 – 2024 leavers
Year 9 – 2023 leavers
A vital component of our recovery effort took the form of exceptionally well attended Summer Schools. With support from the Mercia Learning Trust, Mercia School successfully delivered a Summer School in July 2020 for our 2023 and 2024 leavers. In addition, with support from government allocated funding, the school successfully provided a Summer School in July 2021 for selected 2023, 2024 and 2025 leavers. This page outlines clearly how much funding the school claimed for, how the allocated funds were spent and our rationale.
Rationale:
We decided to run a Summer School for our existing pupils, as opposed to a transition week for new Year 7 pupils (2026 leavers). The reason for this was simple – the first week in September is an allocated Year 7 teaching week only, known as our Inauguration Week. This week happens annually and ensures a positive start for new Year 7 pupils. With this in mind, it made good sense to offer support for our existing pupils, with the understanding that our new Year 7 pupils were guaranteed a full Inauguration Week in September 2021.

Across invited year groups, 227 pupils were offered places. 174 pupils attended the summer school either in full, or for allocated days (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh for 2023 leavers took place on two days only).
The Summer School offered the following activities:
- Additional subject support, with a focus on the EBACC suite of subjects. Pupils received 5 lessons per day in English, Mathematics, Science, History and French. This focussed on 2024 and 2025 leavers.
- Sports based activities for 2024 and 2025 leavers
- Duke of Edinburgh expeditions for 2023 leavers
- Small group intervention for vulnerable pupils in need of tailored support in English and Mathematics, with a focus on 2024 and 2025 leavers
The school claimed £42051.24 of Department of Education (DfE) Summer School Funding. The funds were used as follows:
